Read This: Why I’m Recommending Books

April 2, 2008

When I got pregnant, I started reading the standard pregnancy books, but they mostly scared me. Explanations about medical risks during the pregnancy and birth defects that were statistical unlikelihoods took up so many pages, there was no room for the experience of being pregnant. So I started reading pregnancy memoirs, diaries, and collections of nonfiction personal essays. I’ve since moved on to some parenting guides, but find that even there I’m drawn to the more alternative approaches. I’ve read a lot of pregnancy and parenting books in the last two years. I’ll only write about or recommend what I consider to be The Good Ones.
